About Channel Island Ferries
The Channel Islands have maritime links to a number of ports in the UK including Portsmouth, Poole, and Weymouth and in France including St Malo, Granville and Barneville-Carteret. The main ferry operator used to be the Channel Island Ferries service which was established in 1984 by Brittany Ferries and Huelin Renouf. Channel Island Ferries offered an initial sailing between Portsmouth, Jersey and Guernsey and took a substantial amount of business from its main competitor Sealink Ferries. The British Channel Island Ferries (BCIF) service ceased operations in 1994 and saw Condor Ferries take over its Channel Islands service from Poole.
The main competitor to Condor Ferries used to be Emeraude Lines which had a frequent service between Jersey and St Malo, however the company suspended the service in November 2005 due to financial difficulties and technical issues with its vessel. Since the cessation of the Emeraude Lines ferry service the governments of the Channel Islands and Brittany have been keen to provide an additional service to meet the rising demand by passengers for travel between the Channel Islands and France. HD Ferries now provides a competing value for money service between Jersey, Guernsey and the French ports of St Malo and Cherbourg. Alternative Channel Island operators include Brittany Ferries and LD Lines.
HD Ferries
HD Ferries is a fast catamaran Channel Islands service between Jersey, Guernsey and the French ports of St Malo and Cherbourg. HD Ferries has daily departures (six crossings per day; average crossing time per leg of just one hour) from the port of Saint Helier (Jersey) to St Peter Port (Guernsey) and then to St Malo. HD Ferries has two sailings per week on a Monday and Friday between Jersey, Guernsey and Cherbourg with an average sailing time of three hours.
HD Ferries was established in January 2007 following the cessation of Emeraude Lines in November 2005. The States of Jersey, States of Guernsey and Regional Council of Brittany required an additional ferry service to meet the demand for passenger and freight travel between the Channel Islands and France.
The HD Ferries vessel named HD1 is an Incat K series which is a high speed catamaran with top speeds of 45 knots. The HD1 vessel can support 400 passengers, 100 cars or 70 cars and 10 freight vehicles.
Brittany Ferries
Brittany Ferries was founded in January 1973 by Alexis Gourvennec, and began sailings between Roscoff in Brittany and Plymouth in the South West of England. New routes have been introduced since then with sailings between the UK ports of Portsmouth and Poole to the French ports of Cherbourg, St Malo and Caen and Santander in Spain.
Brittany Ferries offers a luxurious, reliable and modern service between the UK, France and Spain with its current fleet of 8 ships which are the most modern vessels in the Channel, carryinh in excess of 2.6 million passengers, 780,000 cars and 170,000 lorries a year.
LD Lines
LD Lines and Transmanche Ferries provide one of the most frequent services between the UK and France. Currently LD Lines run between the ports of Portsmouth, Newhaven and the French port of Le Havre.
Louis Dreyfus Armateurs now runs the Newhaven to Dieppe service from Transmanche Ferries, increasing it's overall dominance of the central Channel.
LD Lines is a subsidiary of Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, a major player in maritime transport since 1904, now with a fleet of over 60 ships operating worldwide.
